Excuses For Lack Of Posting, Raclette, And A Weekend Update

Sorry posting has been light lately, but this is not a diary, and you are spared many of the mundane details of my life. I can't imagine anyone wants to know what I had for dinner last night, or what I watched on TV. You can get the Chicago weather report HERE so there's no need for me to write about that either.
Basically, it feels like I am running out of things to write about, since I avoid getting into the super personal or the uber mundane, and steer clear of politics. Also, I'm just not feeling as inspired to write lately.
I read a lot of blogs where the author will articulate their doubts, or very very personal details of their lives and get a million comments that blow sunshine up their ass, like Wil Wheaton, for example. I liked his blog a lot better before he became a big time poker geek, but the dude would constantly fish for compliments from his readers to reassure himself that he is a good writer (He's okay, not great) and actor (Better actor than writer, but still not great) When he drops the "Woe is me" thing and just writes honestly is when he's at his best. Well, if I get to the point where I am fishing for compliments here, or using it as a therapists couch, somebody kick me in the fucking balls hard. Anyways, I promise to write more when I have more to write about, I promise.

BT came out for the weekend and it was a nice visit. Oddly enough, we didn't do our usual routine of banging on guitars and hitting the bars this time around, we just hung out and shot the shit, chilled out and abused each other on Halo2. One of the best things about this move has been that I have been able to spend a lot more time with BT and my other Michigan pal CMD. I wish I could see 'em more often, but 5 or 6 times a year is better than once every year or two, that's for sure.

Instead of going out to a restaraunt for a fancy dinner, we introduced BT to Raclette this weekend, which is a Swiss/French meal centered around cheese and various items like ham, sausages, sauerkraut, veggies, etc prepared on a tabletop grill. Everyone prepares their own stuff, melts the cheese in little trays and dumps them over new potatoes andor the other ingredients. It's a great meal for entertaining because everyone is involved, kind of like fondue, but I like it much better. There is a specific cheese that is used for Raclette, but we like to mix it up and use other soft cheeses like Havarti w/hot peppers or dill, which makes for an interesting combination of flavors. If you ever have the chance to try Raclette, the ultimate in comfort food, I wholehearteldy recommend it. (This message has been brought to you by the Raclette Council Of America)

The first 5 songs on shuffle mode today were:

"Rain" - Ian Hunter
"Invisible Sun" - The Police
"Blowout" - Thom Yorke (Radiohead) and The Posies
"Torn" - Ednaswap
"My Flower" - The Ass Ponys

Boring The Sweet Freaking Christ Out Of Myself

You're so far away
and I just can't see you
I'm so far along
and I just don't need you

- Tegan and Sara "Speak Slow"

What is with me lately? I'm becoming a complete bore! Maybe it's the shorter days, but I don't do jack shit anymore during the week. Sleep, work, eat, sleep, work,eat..Jeez, I'm boring myself to death just talking about it. I mean, holy crap, can somebody light a fire under my ass please? Or do I have to find a way to light it myself?
It's a good thing that Brandon is coming this weekend. That guy is the goddamn Energizer Bunny. Seriously. When he's not working, he's writing screenplays and music, and playing in All Right Tokyo. I swear the guy never sleeps. He's my fucking hero. Even if his work ethic doesn't rub off on me, it will be fun hanging out with him this weekend.

There are so many things that I need to stop talking about and start doing.

Here's what shuffle mode fed me to start my exciting workday:

"Little Gifts" - Whiskeytown
"Put Your Hand Inside The Puppet Head" - They Might Be Giants
"I'll Get Them In" - Trashcan Siantras
"Israel" - Miles Davis
"Something In The Way" - Nirvana

A Quick Drive-By Post

Wracking my brain for something interesting to write about, but coming up short. Work is busy, DC has been busy at her work, staying later than usual. So our evenings have been a bit scattershot, I've been so lazy that I haven't even been cooking proper meals ..we had Nachos for dinner last night ferchissakes.
Brandon is coming out to hang this weekend. I'm looking forward to it.
The New Dell DJ is locked, loaded and working like a charm.
That is all.

The first 5 of today's shuffle mode:

"Hands Tied" - Scandal
"Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns" - Mother Love Bone
"Travelin' Soldier" - Dixie Chicks
"All Apologies" - Nirvana
"How To Fight Loneliness" - Wilco

The Return Of The Dell DJ

Kudos to Dell for getting another unit into my hands in less than a week. Their customer service was outstanding in this matter, I spent only a few minutes on hold before getting a live person, who was veryhelpful, and the whole situation got taken care of in a few minutes. They had another unit shipped by the next day and all I have to do is send the broken unit (Rest it's soul) back in the packaging they sent the new one in. No cost, no hassle.
Suh-weet.
So, I did a quick load of some music last night to tide me over until I can get it fully loaded (I doubt that I'll monkey around with creating playlists this time, or if I do, they will be limited)
and here are the first 5 songs it gave me in shuffle mode.

"Mad Word" Gary Jules
"Rewind" Better Than Ezra
"Laughing" The Guess Who
"I Miss You" Blink 182
"Summer Of Drugs" Soul Asylum
(Or was it "The Road" by Tenacious D ? I can't remember)

The Thrill of Temporary Bachelorhood Fades Quickly

Lots of good stuff happening. It's Friday (Thank god), and DC gets home from her business trip today. The dogs will be thrilled, and so will I. It was kind of nice to have the house to myself, but all I did was eat man food (Steak, steak and lamb) listen to music really loud, drink beer, watch hockey and movies that DC would have no interest in. No, not porn, you perverts, I'm talking music documentaries like "DIG", "The Filth and the Fury" and "Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster" all of which are excellent flicks that I'd highly recommend to anyone who enjoys that sort of thing.
Anyways, it will be nice to have her home. I missed her, and the dogs really freak out when one of us isn't there for a while.. It's gonna be crazy when she goes to Africa because she'll be gone for 18 or 19 days ... The only good thing about that will be some of the guys from Detroit will be coming out for a few days while she's gone for a weekend of debauchery (Read: Playing Halo2 on the XBox, playing guitars too loud and Roller Hockey. )
Real decadent, eh ? I know, I'm a savage...

I just found out that my new bestest friend Colleen Caffeine from Choking Susan will be in Chicago for a show in February, so I'm looking forward to seeing them play and hanging out a little more with her, she's a hoot (Is it cool to call a punk rock chick a "hoot" ? Does that diminish their punk/indie cred ?) I met her at the All Right Tokyo Halloween show, and we bonded over Exene Cervenka and a mutual love for the Bumble-Bee Girl from that Blind Melon video...

This post is boring the piss out of me, so I'm gonna stop writing now.

Today marks the return of shuffle mode. Today's first 5:

"New Paths To Helicon Pt II" Mogwai
"Rock Star (Olympia)" Hole
"Dirty South" The Comas
"Up On The Downside" Ocean Colour Scene
"Kite" Copeland

Death Of An MP3 Player

Fare thee well my bright star
it was a brief, brilliant miracle dive
that which I looked up to and I clung to for dear life
had to burn itself up just to make itself alive

- "Fare Thee Well" The Indigo Girls

It was a fighter, I'll give it that. It had a tough life, that little MP3 player did. For the few weeks it was alive it was so, well, alive. So vibrant and full of music and happiness. Unfortunately, for reasons unknown to us, the brilliant stars that burn the brightest, also burn the fastest, and the little MP3 player couldn't take it anymore. I don't know if it was the booze* or the falls** but something finally extinguished the light that was my Dell DJ. Rest in peace beloved player, constant companion, and buffer between me and the outside world. You'll be missed. Your limited warranty may provide another unit, but it will never truly replace you***

For obvious reasons there will be no list of songs that shuffle mode brought up today.

*DC spilled a beer on it.

** Roo's paw snagged the headset and pulled it out of my hand/Another time it fell out of my coat pocket onto the floor/One time I just flat out dropped it like a bonehead, nearly sending it down an elevator shaft (I seriously doubt that would've been covered by the warranty)

*** Or the hours I spent loading you and organizing your contents into playlists. I mean hours upon hours upon fucking hours...

Addendum To "Everything I Touch Turns To Shit"

Okay, maybe not everything.

Only things with a value greater than $50

Or some emotional investment.

Or things I've invested a lot of time in.

And pretty much everything else too.

"Awake" - Letters To Cleo

Catching up: Sorry for the light posting, but after a bit of a crappy week last week. I was wondering if I was putting myself out there too much with this blog and other things, so I've been hanging back until my mood/situation improves. And for those of you that are wondering, the rib is starting to feel better, which leads me to believe that it is, indeed bruised and not cracked. What a relief ! So, now that things have leveled off, here goes ...

Not much is new this week. It's been unseasonably warm for a few weeks now, in fact it was 55 and sunny yesterday.....Chicago weather really freaks me out. I wonder when it will snow again. When we arrived in Chicago one year ago almost to the day, it snowed 15 inches our fist night here and kept snowin' and a snowin'. Not this year. But then again, Winter is far from over.

I just found out this morning that the company I work for is for sale. Everybody's worried about losing their jobs now, but honestly, I'm not. I mean, I like my job and all, and I don't want to lose it, but if I do, oh well. Fuck it, I'll find another one if I have to.

Got free tickets to Wednesday's hockey game (Hawks vs. Flyers) from our cool neighbor Rob. DC and I went with my new hockey buddy Elizabeth and Christie. Christie was late (As usual, but she had given me the heads up on that already) but then she ditched us after one period to hang with a friend with better seats. It was kind of shitty, to be honest with you, but not worth getting bent out of shape over. Apparently Christie has found a way to out-Christie herself. She's a strange bird sometimes. Otherwise, we had a great time. It was free hat night so we all got Hawks caps, and watched the Flyers stomp the Hawks 5-2. The seats were awesome (2nd tier, 1st row) so I hope Rob continues to keep me in mind if he's got tickets to unload !
As an added bonus, I got to see a fistfight between 2 drunken co-workers in the rest rooms at the game. I'm sure the next day at the office was a little akward for them to say the least.

Sounds like Box and Lady Box are settling in okay back in Phoenix, he sent some pics and their new house in is really nice, kind of reminds me of our old pad in Surprise with the loft and stuff. We had a bit of a disagreement over the missed connection on Christmas Eve, but it appears to be behind us now.

I've got a nice piece of music from AZ Mike that I've been remiss in sitting down with. Despite the uneventful nature of the week, it's still been pretty busy, or that's how it seems anyways. DC has been stressed about getting a bunch of stuff done before she goes out of town for business next week. I'm gonna have the house to myself for 3 or 4 days, so I'm gonna load up on documentaries and crap she wouldn't want to see from Netflix.
I'm gonna miss her when she's gone, but Roo is gonna be inconsolable, he's such a Momma's boy. He's better get used to it, because she's gonna be gone for 17 days in April. She's finally taking that Africa trip that she was supposed to be on when I met her. She experienced an unfortunate medical condition (Detached retina) that aborted the original trip and she ended up back in the States, which worked out well for me, because that's when we started dating. But she's always lamented not getting to Africa, so this trip is big deal for her. I won't be going with her (I have no real interest in going to Africa) but her Mom will be joining her, so she won't be there by herself.

I haven't talked much with Annette lately, seems like we've kind of drifted (Seems to be happening with a lot of my friends lately) She was supposed to come out for her birthday weekend in December, but holiday obligations interceded, and we have yet to hammer out a make-up date. I'm planning on being in Detroit for a couple of All Right Tokyo shows, one in February and one in March so I imagine I'll see her at least one of those times. I should probably visit my Dad while I'm there too, but that's another story altogether.

Not much else it new, so I leave you with the first 5 Shuffle-icious selections of the day before I bore you and/or myself to death:

"The Tourist" - Radiohead
"Sweet Little Duck" - Kathleen Edwards
"Say Hello/Wave Goodbye" - David Gray
"Mirror Mirror" - Whiskeytown
"Angelina" - Crooked Fingers

Update 12:34pm: I spoke too soon about the weather, it's been snowing like crazy for the last couple hours. Big fat fluffy wet snowflakes. The weatherman says it's not gonna stick, but there's quite an accumulation at this point, and who believes the weatherman anyways ?

Do You Like Basset Hounds ? Well ? DO YOU ?

Two rescue programs that I support wholeheartedly are the AZ Beagle Rescue and The AZ Basset Hound Rescue. My Ex-wife, Sue is doing some fundraising for The Basset Rescue, her fundraising site is http://www.firstgiving.com/Suzannesdroolers . I plan on making a donation in honor of all my beloved Bassets, past and present: Bessie, Buford, Bobbie and Boogie.
Donate something or you'll burn in hell for all eternity.
Just kidding (No I'm not)

If you're more of a Beagle type person, the AZ Beagle Rescue donation site is Here. We adopted Roo from the AZ Beagle Rescue, and wholeheartedly supprt their efforts as well as the efforts of all the Animal Rescues that try to find good, loving homes for pets in need. Donate something today. Seriously, don't be a fucking dick.

Bruised Ribs And The Beagle That Ate Our Curtains

Remember how I mentioned in my last post feeling like I'd been donkey punched? Well, turns out I might have been. I mean, something happened, because the stabbing pain turns out to be a bruised or cracked rib, and it hurts like fucking hell. It managed to put a bit of a damper on an otherwise wonderful weekend. Seriously, After the week I had I needed to have a good weekend, or I was gonna lose it.
Things started out a little slow, I was still feeling like ass on Friday night so unfortunately I had to decline an invite from Mike B to hang out and watch a movie. I was bummed that I had to beg off, but I still had a lot of catching up to do in the rest department.
We had company coming over on Saturday night so the early part of that day was spent on cleanup, grocery shopping, and the dismantling of the Christmas Tree/Decorations. It was kind of sad. Our little tree had become quite the fixture in the living room, but unfortunately, adoption was not an option as the little fella was becoming more flammable with each passing day. We were making good time on getting things ready, or so we thought. We walked the tree over to the park, where they had the recycling dealio going, dawdling a bit, because it was a beautiful day and it's such a nice park, and in the 30-40 minutes we were gone Roo decided to pull the large curtain rod off of the wall, bringing the heavy draperies and curtain rod crashing down. So we came home to quite a mess (And a freaked out dog) We were lucky the curtains didn't catch fire because they came to rest on a lamp and were already super hot by the time we got home, I can't imagine if that had happened while we were at work. We'd have a burned down house and barbecued dogs.
So we've got the clock ticking on company arriving, I'm already in lots of pain, and now I've gotta fight with a curtain rod that weighs a ton, trying to re-attach it to the wall, where it was mounted in such a half assed fashion to begin with by the previous owners of the house (Thanks a million!) Believe me when I tell you, the last thing you want to be doing when your ribs are fucked up is reaching over your head to screw in these dainty little pussy allen screws, especially when half of the hardware is missing and you're thinking the things is barely strong enough to support the heavy drapery even when all the parts are there. I developed a severe case of temporary Tourette's Syndrome for a while there, cursing Roo, cursing the curtain rod, cursing my ribs, and cursing Dick Cheney while I was at it (For good measure)
I did manage to get the damn thing re-attached to the wall and get myself bathed before our company arrived. Elizabeth, a Canadian expat, and Christie were joining us for spaghetti dinner and Hockey Night In Canada. Elizabeth, who hails from Edmonton hasn't seen a HNIC broadcast in a long time due to her cable situation and last year's lockout, so I invited her over to watch her precious oilers get beaten by the The Maple Leafs (Though I think I phrased the invitiation more diplomatically) Christie also joined us, which made for a nice get together for everybody. The only downside is poor Elizabeth had to listen to me blathering on and on about whatever random subject popped into my head while we watched the game. DC and Christie were off talking in the next room for much of the game, so Elizabeth was a captive audience. Poor thing. Get a few Canadian beers in me and I'm going off about the state of the world and the evil nature of Beagles before you know it. Despite my babbling, everyone appeared to have a great time, and the party didn't break up until around 1 in the morning ...

Since we'd gotten so much accomplished on Saturday, DC & I spent the rest of the weekend in full-on relaxation mode, which is the perfect way to spend a Sunday.

AZ Mike sent me a piece of music to work on, and I'm pretty excited. It's a nice piece of music, so I should be able to do something with it..I'm hoping that we can recapture some of the success we've had with past collaborations, and with todays technology, Geography is no longer an impedance, we can just send mp3 files back and forth via e-mail. We never sat down in the same room and wrote anyways, he's always been the music/hook guy and he's put the tune down on tape and pass it off to me for lyrics and arrangement, etc ... Usually we'd get it hammered out in 2-3 exchanges and voila, a song is born ..Some of our best stuff has been done that way, most notably Privilege of Youth, World Won't Change and Firecracker. I'm doing a similar style of collaboration with Brandon from All Right Tokyo as well and hopefully something good will come of it. Even if it doesn't though, it's good to be working two of my good friends again anyways. I'm also tryign to get together with Mike B again to work on some of his heavier prog rock/metal stuff, I totally suck at playing it, but it sure is fun !

Shuffle mode's first 5 of the day:

"What I Deserve" Kelly Willis
"A Slow Divorce" Boo Hewerdine
"Miami" Counting Crows
"Eastern Bloc" Thomas Dolby (The excellent sequel to "Europa And The Pirate Twins")
"Private Conversation" Lyle Lovett

And finally, as if I don't plug All Right Tokyo enough, here is a picture of me in a very hip and fashionable All Right Tokyo T-Shirt. Makes you wanna buy one doesn't it ? And why buy only one, when you could buy two and give one as a gift ??
While you're at it, buy their CD, it's excellent (Do I get a free one for saying that Brandon?)

PS: I actually had a good week in Fantasy Hockey, I smoked my opponent 9-1. Take that, Ice Stooges, YOU SUCK !!!

Chemical Therapy

Or The Bottle And The Damage Done

Or How I Stopped Worrying And Learned To Love My Chemical Mistress

I'm glad one of my New Year's resolutions wasn't "Drink Less" because I'd be screwed already if it was. After missing a day of work on Wednesday due to an upset stomach aggravated by a surly mood (A story of "seething anger and disgust" unto itself) DC, wanting to cheer me up, suggested a night out. A nice dinner and some drinks maybe. I was feeling human enough by then, so it seemed like a good idea at the time, so I met her downtown and we went to dinner at Ron Of Japan, a teppan place. Since we'd gotten such awful service at Benihana last time, we thought we'd try something new. Mistake #1. The service at Ron was indeed, far better, but the food was another story altogether. For some reason, they put this yellow goop (Egg yolks and ??) all over every seafood item, I mean they slather it on, pile it high until the food is unrecognizable under a quivering mound of mush. Sound good? Believe me, it didn't taste good either. I did enjoy a couple Mai Tais during dinner, which masked much of the awful taste of the seafood and probably kept me from thinking too much about the yellow sludge that most of my food was submerged in. In fact, after three of those Mai Tais you probably could have put a pig's ass in front of me and I would've eaten it.
Anyways, after dinner, DC suggested we get a drink somewhere. Mistake #2. The rest of the night is essentially a blur, but I am certain of a few things:

1) That there was more drinking involved.
2) That there was puking involved
3) That I talked too much
4) That our bar bill of $20 certainly does not reflect the amount that we actually drank, thanks to our favorite bartender and his lax standards for keeping track of actual drinks consumed vs. drinks we are actually charged for.
5) That I owe a certain cab driver an apology and a carwash.

Needless to say, we were both paying the price for it yesterday, in the words of Tom Waits we were "Wasted and Wounded" and feeling like shit for the entire day. I still feel like I've been donkey punched and I doubt I could look a square meal in the eye today, but that's the price you pay for hard living I guess. Poor DC , she suffered even more than me, and feels about the same as I do today, but I've gotta give her credit for taking such drastic measures to cheer my sorry ass up. What a gal !! Now if I can just get through the day without thinking about yellow goop......

Shuffle Mode gave me these five first today:

"Que Te Quiero" Katrina & The Waves
"Walk Throught The Bottomland" Lyle Lovett and Emmylou Harris
"Rhymes & Reasons" John Denver (I hit skip on this one)
"Heavy Metal Bakesale" Local H
"Let My Love Open The Door" Pete Townsend

Still Raining, Hillary Duff, and Pat Monahan in Women's Jeans

The rain and balmy weather continues with no sign of abating. Maybe we'll get snow in June. Who knows ? Chicago weather just freaks me the hell out.

The New Years weekend was uneventful. I got an early start on the festivities on Friday and stayed out until 4am that evening, rendering me essentially useless for New Years Eve. I was barely awake at midnight, which is just as well since all of the NYE countdown shows suck ass.
What are my choices again ? I can watch Hillary Duff, Regis Philbin, a feeble Dick Clark, or Carson Daly? I think I'd rather smash my balls flat with a mallet thank you very much. I mean, I don't mind watching Hillary Duff (She is legal now, isn't she?) but I can't stand listening to her. Do they have to let her lip-synch, er, I mean, sing her latest Disnefied pop tripe so that everybody has to hear it??? Can't she just stand there looking harmless and pretty ? Of course the unfortunate answer is no.
We ended up watching a local broadcast that featured the crap-rock band Train. What a treat. I particularly enjoyed watching the singer, Pat Monahan, prance around in skin tight women's jeans and singing in the wrong key for the entire evening. What's that you say Pat? You're gonna sing some new adult contemporary garbage for us now? Wow! Sounds just like the same crap you've been singing for years !! I hope they do it again next year, maybe we'll make it a tradition out of it.
I think I spent the rest of the weekend in my jammies drinking, playing Halo2, drinking some more, watching movies and drinking. Oh, and napping too. Pretty exciting, huh ? Admit it, you wish you were me.

In the works, some collaborations with Brandon Trenz of All Right Tokyo. We'll see if he can scrub the stink off of some of my unpolished gems (That's a polite way of saying, lets see if he can take some of my crap and make it smell pretty!)

On the bus ride in this morning a young fellow started reading his bible aloud for all to hear. What a nice fellow! And he posessed excellent diction. (Well, he seemed to anyways, since I could hear him clearly over the music in my headphones) He read the whole entire trip to the Blue Line, and lucky me, I got to get off at the same stop as him. As I was leaving the bus someone walked up and shook his hand, thanking him for spreading the word of god. The guy asked our friend the reader what his name was and the fellow replied "Lucifer"
Taken aback, the gentleman said "Your name is Lucifer?"
The reader, nodding said "Uh-Huh, Lucifer means peace."
The gentlemean seemed satisfied, albeit uncomfortable and drew his handshake to a quick conclusion.
I thought I'd left this little tableau behind me as I was walking to the station, when our reader came storming past me shouting "He don't care about the word of god, Fuck God ! Fuck God !"
Something tells me that Mr. Fuck God was a little mentally ill.
Needless to say, I was a little bit relieved when Mr. Fuck God got on a train going the other way.
The sad thing is, this is not such an unusual occurence in the city, I am usually either vaguely amused by such weirdness , or just pretty oblivious ("That's all you got? Fuck God? You need to develop some new material!") but it does give me a chance to write "Fuck God" a few times without getting struck by lightning. Um, Is that thunder rolling in the distance ??

The first 5 Songs that shuffle mode graced me with this morning:

"Under Pressure" Queen & David Bowie
"Don't Cry" Guns N' Roses (The alternate version on "Use Your Illusion II")
"Oh Me" Nirvana
"Helium" Feeder
"Can't Stop This Feeling I Got" Prince
